THE LASER
A very special beam of light
What is a laser?
A laser is a device that produces a very concentrated, organised beam of light. It can travel in a precise direction and deliver light energy to a specific point.
Who invented it?
The scientist Albert Einstein discovered one of the ideas that made lasers possible. Many years later, in 1960, Theodore Maiman built the first working laser.
Where are lasers used?
In lots of places! Doctors use them in some operations, scientists use them for research, factories use them to cut materials, and computers use them to transmit information. Lasers can also create spectacular light shows like this one.
Why do we need smoke?
Even when a laser beam is travelling through the air, we normally cannot see it from the side. Tiny particles in the smoke scatter the light, allowing some of it to reach our eyes. That’s how we discover the beam’s path!
Remember!
A powerful laser is not a toy. Never look directly into a laser beam or at its reflections in mirrors. They can damage your eyes very quickly.
Light can be fascinating, but we must always learn to use it safely.
